Commercial Appeal - Germantown Ok's new fire station

Tuesday, December 15, 2009

Belz Investco GP was the low bidder at $3,024,468.  Germantown Fire Chief Dennis Wolf said the new fire station at Forest Hill-Irene Road and Poplar Avenue would replace one that was built in 1967 as the Forest Hill Volunteer Fire Department. The existing building will be torn down. In recent years, firefighters have battled a leaky roof, mold, termites and the back wall separating from the existing foundation. Wolf said the building would not withstand an earthquake. Fire Station No. 4 covers just over 4 square miles now and about a fourth of the land or 282 acres is undeveloped. "We are planning for future growth ... for the next 30 to 40 years," Wolf said. In addition to functioning as a fire station, the 14,000-square-foot building is designed to serve as a training facility, a secondary emergency operations center, a satellite police patrol office and a backup for both the communications center and the computer server room.
